The matter finally simmered down to the fact
that the Highway Commission were forced to find a place to put large sums of
money, or it would revert to the Government, and lose this money to the state. For
this reason, the Highway Commission turned their eyes to Glacier County.
First, for the reason that on account of the fact that lands on Indian
Reservations may enjoy the benefit of 100% of Federal Aid construction, and
secondly, because Glacier County joins Glacier Park, it would be a benefit to
the entire state, as well as other states, to have the entrance roads to
Glacier Park in first-class shape. After the proposition was put up to Glacier County, it was only a short time until
the proposed Federal Aid roads were released by the owners and Indian allottees,
and a comparative short time when Federal Aid roads were under construction. Glacier County has now, approximately 60 miles
of Federal Aid highway complete, and nearly as much on which construction has
been started, or will be started within a short time. I feel this is not only a
great asset to Glacier County, but also to the state, particularly on
account of the fact that this highway is all at the entrance of Glacier Park. I have talked to many tourists who
have been over it, and they are all surprised how fine this road is, and are
all very much pleased with it.
