Robert Hamilton whips
McFatridge’s delegation
Robert Hamilton
was selected by the people to go to Washington
to represent the Blackfeet Tribe, but McFatridge wrote Commissioner Sells
asking him to tell the Indians their delegation was not authorized. A month
later McFatridge arranged a delegation of his own in a tribal meeting with the
favored half-breeds Kennerly, Buck, Burd, Clarke and Perrine.
Superintendent McFatridge informed the Indian Commissioner that the Blackfeet wanted
to sell their un-allotted lands under the reclamation project which had cost
the Indians nearly one million dollars of their land cession monies expended
against their will, and he had arranged a meeting between his progressive half-breeds
and the Commercial Clubs of border-towns in Cut Bank, Valier, Conrad, and
Choteau, who were promoting the Indian surplus land sale in Congress through
their senators.
The Blackfeet Indians elected Robert Hamilton, Oliver
Sanderville, Young Man Chief, Black Weasel, and Wolf Plume for their delegation
to Washington
to protest the land sale. Superintendent McFatridge reported to the
commissioner, “The whole thing on the face of it shows that Hamilton has undertaken to take advantage of
these people and, no doubt, would have succeeded had it not been for the fact
that a copy of these minutes came into my hands, and a protest was filed with
me against such procedure. If the Office desires an expression of the entire
tribe of Indians relative to this matter; and will notify me, I will be pleased
to call a general council of the tribe to decide whether or not they wish a
delegation sent to Washington, and, if so, to select a delegation that would consist
of actual representatives of this tribe of Indians. I do not wish to be
understood as taking exception to such men as Young Man Chief, Black Weasel,
and Wolf Plume as representatives of the tribe, but to send these men to Washington with Robert Hamilton, as interpreter, would
mean that Hamilton
would be the one to represent the tribe. Past experience has taught, not only
me, but the better class of people belonging to the Blackfeet Tribe that Hamilton is not an honest
interpreter.
