The exploitation of Blackfeet resources hasn't stopped right up to today. For instance, the Blackfeet Reservation is well watered with vast amounts of clean water since it borders Glacier Park with no polluters in between the reservation and the source of the water in the Rocky Mountains. Bottled water is a global market while the domestic market is 9.67 billion gallons of bottled water. The water compact negotiated by the Federal Trustee, the Department of the Interior, did not allow a clause for the Blackfeet landowners, who own the water aquifers underneath their property, to lease or sell their water to domestic or global markets. But, a Texas billionaire is buying up federal water rights under the Ogallala Aquifer, which holds groundwater for much of the Great Plains States and is regulated by the Department of Agriculture. Farmers buy this water from the federal government for $50 an acre foot and lease it to cities etc. for millions of dollars. One acre foot contains 325,850 gallons and is worth conservatively $1.00 per gallon=$325,850 product of bottled water product per acre foot. The Blackfeet landowners still own 900,000 acres of land but are among the poorest in the nation. Think what 900,000 acre feet of pure, mountain water flowing directly from Glacier National Park is valued on world and domestic bottled water markets. The tiny village of Starr School sits on an aquifer of pure water, an ocean of water, ready for market without any filtering. There are Las Vegas Casinos and purchasers from China interested in Blackfeet water, beef, oil & gas, or any other product the Blackfeet can produce. The water compact between the Blackfeet Tribe, Blackfeet landowners, and Blackfeet allottees, State of Montana, and the United States Government does not allow the Blackfeet to market their water products off-reservation markets, and if the Blackfeet are allowed to market their water in the future local white men on the borders of the reservation and white men living on the stolen Blackfeet land allotments, and the State of Montana will have first right of refusal to take the deal from the Blackfeet business partners. What nation, corporation, or investors would negotiate with the Blackfeet Indians under those restrictions? It is hypocritical of the United States to restrict free-trade for Indian resources, but allow any other business or citizen to make any deal they desire such as the Texas billionaire buying up federal water rights to pipeline federal water to dry, hot, cities for his personal profit. The Secretary of the Interior is a billionaire, so she understands how business is conducted for maximum profit, but why is she blind to the corruption in the water compact. I was thrown out of the water compact meeting on the reservation when I tried to bring up the issue of settling our land claims before we are forced to agree to a compact that will extinguish our land claims and give those lands and water rights to the white men who robbed the Indians to get on the reservation. What do the Blackfeet Tribe and Blackfeet landowners get from the compact? An estimated $150 million to be paid in annual installments of $15 million per year to settle all claims against the United States and the State of Montana. The Montana Legislature has set aside $150 million from which the interest generated will pay off the Blackfeet people costing the state zero dollars in the end, and they get our water rights for nothing. That is how our federal trustee looks out for the interests of the Government Wards. The reason that we have to have a federal protector is that corporations and border-whites would rob us blind as we have suffered for 100 years. We have the right to vote against this compact but then we would have to hire water attorneys to defend our water rights in state courts and we do not have the money to pay for attorneys, and what chance would we have for justice in the courts of the State of Montana or Federal Court for that matter. It is a "legal steal" of valuable Blackfeet water rights, and the water rights of Indians across the United States. I appeal to the citizens of the world to shame the United States Government into giving us justice in our own lands in our own country as provided for in treaty. Why would other peoples across the world trust the word of the United States when this tyranny exists over the Indian people.
